Mission Statement
(a personal note about who we be & what we do...)

Damage Control Dance Theater
is not just a dance company, a way of moving, or a group of art-bound friends - it's a philosophy.
We believe that dance (in fact, all art), is Damage Control for life.
No matter how stressed, tired, frustrated, stuck, angry, or hurt we become, no matter what challenges or joys we face, there is always a dance class, rehearsal, or performance waiting just around the corner that will push, challenge, surprise, and inspire us. Or, even better, will allow us to push, challenge, surprise, and inspire ourselves.
We believe that there is nothing we can't face within ourselves or others through dance, and nothing we can't share with our audience - who, we hope, will see a little something of themselves in the work.
We believe that dance training is life training, and that the lessons of one are the lessons of the other.
We believe that dance has the power to inspire, transform, tell stories, paint pictures, and teach.
We are always looking for a bigger and better challenge. We are always looking for the edge of our endurance, skill, stamina, and comfort-zone, in order to break through it to the mystery that lies on the other side. We believe in facing that mystery head on.
We believe that great art is not always comfortable.

We create High Art on the Down Low.
We believe that dance can, and should, be accessible to everyone.
We create folkloric dance - that is, dance for, of, and by, "the folk" - within a modern dance idiom - that is, with an eye toward theatricality, staging, cohesiveness, and a western compositional aesthetic.
So whether the movement draws from Bellydance, Pop n' lock, Hip Hop, or Haitian, Flamenco, Indian, or Contemporary, we're reaching into the belly of the beat and coming up with a vocabulary that's raw, primal, visceral, and true for us. We use this vocabulary for the telling of stories we know, or the stories we'd like to hear.
We're not all ballerinas. We're not all sleeping beauties.
Not all of the stories are dark - but not all of them are light, either.
We believe that sometimes the simplest stories are the most powerful.
We believe that everyone has an important story to tell, and the tools to tell it with, right now.
We believe that we can draw from the world around us, as well as the world within ourselves, to create a language that is universal, and cuts through genres, barriers, and stereotypes.
We believe that we can be the change we wish to see - in dance, in life, and in the world. We believe that you can, too.

love,
cera & dcdt
